The CK Ranch, Brookville, Kan., raises registered Hereford cattle and a commercial cow-calf herd. When seedstock operators commingle bulls from different groups for shipment to customers, riding behavior sometimes can present a risk of injury to the bulls. Ranch owners Jack, Donna and John Vanier, and manager Ray Negus designed this pen to stop bulls from riding. The heavy poles across the top of the pen allow cattle to move freely underneath but discourage riding. They have found that after 24 hours or so in the pen, the bulls settle down.
