One way to help control the cost of feeding cows is to reduce the amount of hay wasted. Mike and Jean Jones have been able to reduce wasted hay by unrolling large round bales and stringing an electric wire down the middle of the hay. The cows must be switched from one paddock to another while the hay is being unrolled and the poly-wire fence erected. But the chore only takes a few minutes, the Joneses say, and the cows eat as much as 90 percent of the hay fed. This practice also eliminates the need for feeding hay in hay rings, which concentrates the cows into a small area that becomes especially messy during wet conditions.
