Covering silage pits with plastic is a big job. A lot of old tires must be moved around and placed on the plastic silage cover to hold it down to prevent the loss of silage quality. To save time and labor, Steve Hunt and Chris Hunt of Granville, Iowa, converted an old hay elevator to bring old tires up to the top of the bunker silo. Using a blowtorch, the sides of the elevator were cut down level with the chain allowing the flighting to carry the tires up.

The tires are stored on old bale racks to prevent rodents from living under the tire pile and they can be pulled to wherever the elevator is needed.
