Rancher Mike Levi, Novotny Angus, Winner, S.D., has fabricated a simple way to operate sorting gates. The ranch's processing area includes three alleys coming off the chute for use in sorting calves and replacement heifers. Two iron gates can close off any two of the three alleys, but operating the gates individually during processing requires excessive manpower.

To solve the problem, Mr. Levi welded a bar at a 90-degree angle to each end of a metal pipe the same length as the top of the gate. By inserting the bars into the top corner of each gate, workers can operate both gates together, directing cattle to any of the three alleys. They can remove the connecting bar easily to operate the gates individually.
