Limits for exposure to safe levels of sound are well known to safety and health researchers, but measuring noise levels requires instruments not usually available to producers. There are, however, some common warning signs that you are exposing yourself to damaging levels of noise for prolonged periods of time.

If you have experienced a ringing noise or somewhat muffled sense of hearing, you've probably been exposed to excessive noise. You may also notice the loss of the ability to hear certain sounds. For example sounds at higher frequencies.

Using hearing protection can reduce the risk of hearing loss and cut stress and risk of injury. Hearing protection should be worn in the workplace whenever noise approaches damaging levels. Keep in mind that hearing protection devices are not one size fits all. Seek out devices that fit correctly, filter out the right amount of noise and allow you to operate effectively on the job.
