Both calf and yearling markets have experienced significant pressure since prices peaked in March. According to Drovers/CattleNetwork’s 50-market auction summary, steer calf prices declined 11 percent since May, and yearling steers are 10 percent lower. Steer calves weighing 400 to 500 pounds saw average bids in July of $160.97 per hundredweight, $20.12 lower than May. Yearling steers weighing 600 to 700 pounds averaged $141.88 during July, a drop of $15.40 per hundredweight since May. Heifer calves sold for an average of $148.00 per hundredweight, down $15.82 since May. Yearling heifers weighing more than 600 pounds saw average bids last month of $127.20, a decline of $10.05 per hundredweight.
