Yearlings strengthen into summer

All classes of stocker and feeder cattle posted gains during July, with the greatest demand for heavy yearlings, according to Drovers/CattleNetwork’s 50-market auction summary. Prices were even to $4 behind the same time last year. Steer calves weighing 400 to 500 pounds posted an average gain of 6 cents for the month at $156.01 per hundredweight. Yearling steers weighing 600 to 700 pounds averaged $141.68, up $5.57 per hundredweight for the month. Heifer calves sold for an average of $142.33 per hundredweight, an increase of $5.32. Yearling heifers saw average bids of $125.92, a gain of $5.78.
