Stocker and feeder calf prices declined slightly during May according to Drovers 50-market auction summary. Steer calves 400 to 500 pounds averaged $107.82 per hundredweight, down $3. Feeder steers 600 to 700 pounds were steady too a few cents lower at $91.83 per hundredweight. Heifer calves weighing 400 to 500 pounds sold for $98.08 per hundredweight, down $2. Yearling heifers averaged $81.00 per hundredweight. Demand for feeder cattle will increase now that the seasonal wheat runs have tapered off, meaning smaller supplies. Adequate moisture will also support calf demand. Expect calf prices to remain bullish or at least steady through the summer.
