Stocker and feeder calf prices moved higher during December according to Drovers 50-market summary. Steer calves 400 to 500 pounds averaged $104.68 per hundredweight, up $4 from seasonal lows in September. Steers, 600 to 700 pounds averaged $87.59 per hundredweight, a $1 increase from last month. Heifer calves weighing 400 to 500 pounds sold for $93.67 per hundred- weight. Yearling heifers averaged $79.65 per hundredweight. Feeder cattle are harder to find this winter as corn prices have stabilized and the fed market saw a strong rally. Feeder cattle prices usually peak seasonally by February as supplies increase, but continued demand warrants risk management against higher prices through the first half of this year.
