Demand for feeder cattle was strong in January according to Drovers’ 50-market summary. Prices were up in every category. Steer calves 400 to 500 pounds averaged $105.07 per hundredweight, averaging $4 more than a year ago. Feeder steers, 600 to 700 pounds, at $89.22 per hundredweight were $2 to $3 higher than last January. Heifer calves weighing 400 to 500 pounds sold for $95.60 per hundred- weight, a $6 increase from January 2000. Yearling heifers averaged $81.36 per hundredweight. Fewer feeder cattle are expected to come off pastures in February and March due to higher calf placements last fall. Stocker calves will trend higher until spring turn out.
