Despite a declining fed cattle market, stocker and feeder prices improved slightly during June, according to Drovers exclusive 50-market auction summary. Steer calves 400 to 500 pounds averaged $108.02 last month, an increase of 20 cents per hundredweight. Yearling steers 600 to 700 pounds increased $1.42 per hundredweight to $93.25. Heifer calves 400 to 500 pounds averaged $98.44 per hundredweight, an increase of 36 cents. Yearling heifers 600 pounds and over averaged $83.32, an increase of $2.32 per hundredweight. Demand for stocker and feeder cattle remains strong as supplies are ever tighter, and grain prices weaken further. Poor feedyard margins will likely limit any rally in the stocker feeder market over the coming weeks.
