Finally, a pet association with the words “Humane Society” in their name that actually puts its resources toward helping unwanted animals.
Recently, the new Humane Society for Shelter Pets (HSSP), just launched in a big way with ads in the New York Times, Chicago Tribune and USA Today to announce the launch of its new 501 (c)3non-profit organization. See the ad here.
Why should the food animal industry care? Because here is an organization helping to educate consumers about the true nature of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) which does not support local animal shelters and is a vegan-oriented organization that would like to see the end of animal agriculture. In these times, we can use all the help we can get.
HSSP is dedicated to educating consumers, animal rescue organizations and veterinarians on how and where they can interact with their local animal shelters instead of pouring money into the gaping maw that is the HSUS which funds a lot of big salaries and lobbyists but doesn’t directly help animals.
So check them out here. And encourage well-meaning folks you know who want to contribute to unwanted pet shelters to go local. The HSSP can show them how.

"I hope you’ll join with me in refusing to be manipulated by those whose motivations are to remove any impediment to their continued and expanded abuse of animals.
They have started by attacking the HSUS, but I have no doubt they will then come after the rest of us who speak up
for animals."

Report AbuseThere are groups on the Internet, who don’t do any hands-on work for animals at all. For example, notorious Washington, D.C., lobbyist Richard Berman has announced that he’s fabricating from whole cloth a “new” humane group called “Humane Society for Shelter Pets.” The group lists no street address, is not registered with the Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance, Charity Navigator, GuideStar, or any other charity watchdog, and has more than a dozen complaints against it pending before the Federal Trade Commission.
Berman’s for-profit PR firm has a shocking record of pocketing the lion’s share -- sometimes more than 90 percent of funds that wash through his other misnamed “charities.” This shameful record of anti-public service has been exposed again and again by the news media, including CBS’ “60 Minutes,” the Los Angeles Times, The New York Times and many others. Links to these exposes can be found here.

Report AbuseTerry. HSSP is a brand new non-profit, it is too new to be listed with any organization that monitors charities or with the BBB. HSSP is newly-formed and it has not requested any donations and it does not sell anything. What possible complaint could the FTC have about HSSP? I imagine that FTC has several thousand complaints against HSUS because of its regular frauds.
Berman may earn an income, but his income is about 10% of what HSUS earns in it various frauds and schemes.

Report AbuseThanks to HSUS, there is cohesion in our struggle to protect animals and move the nation forward on humane issues: shutting down puppy mills, promoting spay/neuter, encouraging shelter pet adoption, and other issues that are crucial to our joint success. And they are always ready to mobilize their rescue teams to work with local shelters responding to natural disasters, hoarding cases, dog fighting rings,
puppy mill raids, and other large-scale, often overwhelming, problems.

Report AbuseThank you somuch Ms. Starr. Many of us who 'speak for the animals' have been around for a very long time.We are well aware of these desperate tactics by these breeders, hunters, NRA, cattlemens assoc. SOAVA, and even the FArm Bureau Insurance, Pork Council...and yes, Mr. Rick Berman (Center for Consumer Freedom.com) to fight off those of us, "more evolved" members of the human race who understand that just because we cannot communicate with a living being does NOT give us the right to kill them & eat them! Those types of people assume that "they wern't made to SPEAK so we can eat them! Why stop at humans? If they are not capable of understanding, or communicating can we eat them too? We must enlighten ourselves in order to sustain this planet! Makes sense to me!

Report AbuseCarla,
Unlike you, I'm not evolved at all, I'm a creation of God, just as are the animals we eat with his gracious and kind permission. Did you know God actually gave the human race dominion over all other animal life. Why not contact your local public library and check out a book titled "Holy Bible" and begin reading in the section entitled "Genesis. I'll be a great read for you.
BTW, good luck with your evolving.

Report AbuseIt's wonderful to see an effective national organization appear which truly seeks to bring together the public who wish to help homeless animals and those in need of a home, food and love. YAYYYYY for HSfSP!!
Upon looking closely into those instances where HSUS has claimed to help animals, it always seems it was only to help load them up and dump them at the nearest kill shelter, just like their involvement after Katrina passed through Louisiana (per my in-laws).
Really people, do you want to put your precious and hard-earned money towards helping the desrving animals, or padding 401k plans, tailored suits and perfectly coifed hair on a smooth-talking pretty-boy?

HSUS is a joke. In 2008 of the $8 million dollars they raised, $450,000 actually went to care for animals. They're a wolf in sheep's clothing. They have the same agenda as PETA, to end all animal agriculture. Most of the people in high positions in the HSUS are PETA members. They lie to the media and use those sad commercials to raise money, but in reality that money goes toward lobbyists and pension plans.

Report AbuseWhatever your feelings about HSUS, anyone applauding the mission of the so-called "Humane Society for Shelter Pets" should know that Rick Berman has threatened to sue animal shelters whose directors have questioned his organization's motives: http://richmondspca.typepad.com/richmond-spca-blog/2011/12/tis-the-season-forthreats-our-ceo-receives-tidings-from-rick-berman.html
That's right: HSSP is bullying the very organizations it claims to support. This is totally consistent with CCF/HumaneWatch/Berman's history of defaming organizations like HSUS and MADD and then filing lawsuits against anyone who dares to criticize his faux-charities. Please support your local shelter, and don't fall for Berman's latest scam.
