An event planned for this summer will recognize South Dakota’s cattle producers and stock local food pantries with the one item they need most.

The first annual Prime Time Gala is presented by the South Dakota Cattlemen's Foundation and is headlined by Gary Allan. The Argus Leader reports the foundation was established about a year ago specifically to host the event.

On top of recognizing the state’s beef producers, the foundation has a goal of raising $100,000 for Feeding South Dakota. The funds will be used to purchase meat, an item that makes up only four percent of all food donations received by Feeding South Dakota.

Matt Gassen, executive director of Feeding South Dakota, says the pantries distributed more than 12 million pounds of food in 2013, but obstacles make it difficult to collect donations of meat.

The event takes place at the Sioux Falls Arena and Convention Center on June 14. Proceeds from the banquet and concert go to Feeding South Dakota.

Organizers hope to make the event an annual celebration.
