A couple of weeks ago I was reading a commentary in the Kansas City Star that mentioned some readers recently objected to Kansas City being referred to as "Cowtown" in some article headlines. One reader said, "Isn't it time that The Star took the lead in getting rid of that name? Does the paper want other cities to think we’re all a bunch of hicks?" ... Full story.

In the last couple of years TV has portrayed our nation’s livestock farmers in a bad light with some undercover videos. Those bad apples have painted a poor image of the rest of the country’s hard-working producers who care for their animals and care about the food they produce.

The 2007 Ag Census from the USDA indicated that there were 656,475 operations specializing in beef cattle ranching and farming, and 31,065 cattle feedlots, for a total of 687,540 beef operations. In 2007, there also were 57,318 farms in the United States that specialized in dairy cattle and milk production.
