Beef prices continue to soar

Early last week we reported that Select wholesale beef had topped the $200 per hundredweight milestone. Prices continued to climb throughout the week, and on Monday, Jan. 13, the Select beef cutout gained another $3.18 to average $214.76 per hundredweight. The Choice cutout meanwhile, averaged $216.94 on Monday, according to the National Daily Cattle and Beef Summary from USDA.

A week earlier, on Jan 6, the Choice cutout averaged $205.54 per hundredweight and Select was at $201.38.

Last week, the prices for finished steers and heifers reached new record highs, averaging just under $140 per hundredweight, according to USDA’s five area weekly slaughter cattle report.
