Cattle producers seeking ways to better manage their operations in ever more challenging business conditions should register now to attend the April 6 Eastern Oklahoma Beef Cattle Summit in McAlester.
David Cantrell, Pittsburg County Extension director and agricultural educator, said this year’s summit will emphasize understanding and maximizing the benefits of technological advances in animal agriculture.
“Profit margins are tight for most beef operations,” he said. “Taking steps to ensure you can make the best informed decisions possible is key to protecting your investments in animals, feed, forage, labor and other resources.”
The 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. summit will take place at the Southeast Oklahoma Expo Center, located at 4500 W. Highway 270 in McAlester. Registration is $10 per participant, which covers the cost of summit materials, refreshments and lunch.
“We’re asking participants to pre-register by March 30 or earlier as it helps ensure we have sufficient numbers of materials, refreshments and lunches available,” Cantrell said.
Registration forms are available through all Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension county offices, typically listed under ‘County Government’ in local directories.
David Gregg Riley, Texas A&M associate professor of animal breeding and genetics, will be the summit’s keynote speaker, providing insights about coat color in cattle.
“Dr. Riley has been part of a project evaluating white Angus cattle in Florida,” said Brian Freking, OSU Cooperative Extension area livestock specialist. “He will be providing a great background into genetic inheritance for different cattle traits and describe tools available for producers.”
Other sessions will focus on GeneMax Advantage, pinkeye control, beef industry updates, the latest market outlook data and what it means to beef producers, use of the OSU-developed GreenSeeker technology and a DNA cattle demonstration.
Sessions will be led by experts from OSU’s Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association and Oklahoma Beef Council.
A trade show and door prizes also will be showcased.
“The summit has become one of the premier single-day beef events in the region, and is an opportunity not only to interact with experts from industry and academia but also speak with fellow producers who may be in situations similar to your own, and who may have developed solutions that could prove useful into your own operation,” Freking said.
