A cold storage facility and packing shed sold in 2008 by Wenatchee, Wash.-based Stemilt Growers Inc. burned to the ground June 20.

Stemilt sold the downtown Wenatchee facility because it was impractical to maneuver trucks through downtown, said Roger Pepperl, the company’s marketing director.

The historic brick building was to have been converted into lofts, Pepperl said. The multi-story building featured hand-packing pear lines, he said.
