Description of Work Unit

The Department of Animal Sciences has the unique mission of serving Colorado’s large and diverse livestock industries. Research, teaching and extension outreach activities in the Department of Animal Sciences focus on developing industry leaders and improving profitable production of horses and food animals through the application of science and technology, resource management and food product enhancement, with emphasis on addressing societal issues concerning food safety, product quality and value, animal care and management, and environmental impacts of animal agriculture.
We are seeking a Program Coordinator (Research Associate I) whose primary responsibilities include coordinating and managing the Colorado Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) Program. This will include close working partnerships with organizations including the Colorado Beef Council, Colorado Cattlemen’s Association, Colorado Livestock Association, Colorado Department of Agriculture, Colorado Veterinary Medical Association, CSU Extension, and Colorado beef producers to disseminate and implement Colorado BQA Program objectives and criteria.

Position Summary

 

The person in this position will be relied upon to support beef and dairy cattle producers’ ability to produce safe, high-quality, and consistent beef for consumers. In addition, the coordinator will be expected to make vibrant personal relationships between CSU and cattle producers in rural Colorado through a variety of audiences. Oversight of certification and recertification of cattle producers in the Colorado BQA Program, as well as tracking of certification status of producers, will also be expected. This person will work with a newly-developing network of BQA trainers throughout the state – consisting of licensed veterinarians and county/regional livestock extension educators and specialists – to offer BQA certification and educational information to various audiences. The coordinator will also manage BQA events, including leading BQA Certifications, and promote the BQA Program, recruit participation, and respond to inquiries and questions. Additional responsibilities may include teaching an undergraduate course addressing quality assurance, total quality management, and/or biosecurity in cattle production systems. Opportunities exist for collaborating in BQA-related research with faculty in Animal Sciences, Clinical Sciences, and other departments across campus, as well as interaction with National BQA.

Required Job Qualifications

 

Candidates must have a B.S. or advanced degree in Animal Science, or a related field from an accredited institution.
Solid understanding of the U.S. beef production industry. Experience in hands-on management of beef and/or dairy cattle.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including high-quality presentation skills.
Ability to interact competently with cattle producers, organizations, students, allied industry representatives, veterinarians, scientists, and/or consumers. Must possess a valid drivers license. Proficient in MS Office Suite (emphasis on Excel) and electronic correspondence such as email. Physical demands include some heavy lifting and manual dexterity, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, handling, and talking. Environmental conditions include exposure to weather and noise. Hazards include proximity to moving, mechanical parts and exposure to cattle in yard or chute side settings. Ability to travel overnight and accommodate a flexible work schedule.

Preferred Job Qualifications

 

Experience in total quality management, hazard analysis critical control point and quality assurance principles and philosophies.
