Controversies continue over Congress's passing of the bill that banned the mandated labels on genetically modified organisms (GMOs) on food. However, one sociologist says that the arguments are fueled more heavily by emotions and politics rather than actual science, reports Elizabeth Whitman for the International Business Times.

Carmen Bain, an associate professor of sociology at Iowa State University, reported to Whitman, “If you look at the arguments GMO proponents use, and the arguments that have really resonated with segments of consumers, it has been nothing to do with science." 

Though scientists agree that human consumption of GMOs is safe, public opinion tends to think otherwise and believes labeling is necessary. However, many companies have profited off the fear that the GMO products create, including Chipotle Mexican Grill. "Calls for labeling are always political," Bain said. "There are always social and economic interests at stake,” reported Whitman.
