Live and feeder cattle futures spent the end of last week sitting in the red, pushing the October live cattle future contract to trade under a dollar for the third session in September. According to David Minor of South Dakota Regional Livestock in Sioux Falls, cattle feeders are going to have to buy feeder cattle at a lower price.
“Yes I do think there will be an impact because everybody is trying to buy feeders down where they will work,” he says. “And if we have fat cattle going a little lower, the futures even turning lower, it’s going to be hard to make any protections put on with your hedges.”
