Just 25 percent of corn remains in fields as farmers across the country raced over the last week to harvest corn.
According to the USDA’s latest Crop Progress report, 75 percent of corn has been harvested as of Oct. 25, compared to 44 percent last year and the five-year average of 68 percent.
Six states in particular made significant progress over the last week, advancing by at least 20 percentage points since the Oct. 19 report: Iowa (73 percent), Minnesota (81 percent), North Dakota (64 percent), Ohio (76 percent), South Dakota (60 percent) and Wisconsin (47 percent).
The USDA also reported an impressive soybean harvest pace. Currently 87 percent of soybeans have been harvested, compared to last year’s 68 percent and the five-year average of 80 percent. The only state to report less than 60 percent of soybeans harvested was North Carolina (26 percent).
