J. O. Patterson purchased homesteads in the late 1800's as they became available. The ranch he amassed, located by Lost Lake in what is now Chouteau County, Montana, was subsequently called "Lost Lake Land and Livestock.”

By 1904, J.O. was appointed postmaster of Lost Lake. He began raising sheep, but later converted the livestock to all cattle. J. O. retired after World War 2 and his daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Louis Jurgens, took over the operation. They raised Hereford cattle and converted portions of the land to farming.

In 1968, Bill and Dolores Harrer purchased the ranch and called it "Harrer's Lost Lake Ranch" which is what the ranch is also called today. Their original intent was to establish a top commercial herd that had both the quality and efficiency necessary to make ranch payments.

Shortly after their ranch acquisition, the family began the gradual change to an all-Angus operation, starting with the purchase of 10 registered Angus cows. This change better reflect the Harrer Angus roots.

The Great Plains Conservation was utilized to help build fences and lay pipelines in order to control grazing and water distribution. Maintaining and improving the environment was and still remains a primary goal.

In 1992, the cattle and equipment were sold to Grant and Deanna Harrer, who continue to carry on the tradition of Angus cattle in the Harrer family.

The ranch prides itself on producing cattle to work in "the real world." Their cattle are developed to display their potential and conditioned to pass it on, are not selected by guesswork and have end-product merit for all segments of the beef industry. The Harrer's are proud to provide high-quality cattle at an affordable price. The docility of their cattle is an added bonus.
