Piece by piece, pump by pump, a half-built ethanol plant in south-central Nebraska is being auctioned off.

Altra Inc. started work on the 110 million-gallon plant near Carleton in 2006, but work on the $220 million project halted in November 2007 because the Healdsburg, Calif., company couldn't obtain needed financing.

Altra's Nebraska subsidiary filed for bankruptcy August. Attempts to sell the plant intact failed, so each bin, pipe and part is being sold at auction Wednesday to satisfy the estimated $86 million debt.
