There are less than two weeks in the Tom Vilsack administration at the USDA. Before he goes, the Secretary of Agriculture is leaving a “wish list” of things he’d like to see accomplished by the next head of the USDA.
According to Pro Farmer’s Washington consultant, Secretary Vilsack left an exit memo with several bullet points.
- Vilsack would like Congress to lift some restrictions which currently limits USDA’s use of Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC) for emergency financial assistance to farmers.
- He’d also like to see implementation of the GMO labeling law President Obama signed in July.
- Vilsack wants the next administration to modify safety net programs, such as the Dairy Margin Protection Program (MPP-Dairy).
Coincidentally, it’s widely expected Vilsack will assume a leadership post in the dairy sector when he leaves USDA this month.
