In the West, separate storms are affecting the region. Precipitation in advance of a cold front stretches from the Pacific Northwest to the northern Rockies. Meanwhile, a few sprinkles are crossing southern California as a disturbance moves ashore.

On the Plains, mild, breezy weather prevails in advance of a pair of Pacific storms and an Arctic cold front. On the central and southern Plains, pastures and winter wheat are still in need of moisture to stabilize crop conditions.

In the Corn Belt, snow showers and breezy conditions accompany a surge of colder air. Snow is heaviest from parts of Iowa into the lower Ohio Valley.

In the South, chilly weather in the southern Atlantic States contrasts with warm conditions farther west. Despite recent rainfall, drought remains entrenched across much of the Deep South.

Outlook: A cold weather pattern will persist in the Midwest and East into next week, along with occasional snow showers. Meanwhile, cold air will engulf much of the remainder of the U.S. during the weekend. Snow will precede and accompany a surge of extremely cold air across the Plains; by early next week, low temperatures will range from near 0 degrees F on the southern High Plains to -25 degrees F or below in Montana. By Sunday, snow associated with a developing storm will spread across the South from the southeastern Plains to the southern Appalachians. Early next week, the winter storm will take aim on the Ohio Valley and the Mid-Atlantic States. The NWS 6- to 10-day outlook for January 12-16 calls for near- to below-normal temperatures nationwide, except in Maine, California, and parts of the Southwest. The greatest likelihood of cold conditions will stretch from the northern Plains into the middle Mississippi Valley. Meanwhile, above-normal precipitation in northern and central portions of the Rockies and Plains will contrast with drier-than-normal weather across the nation’s southern tier.
